What is a Danish folk college?
Danish folk colleges are a unique concept and part of the non-formal educational system in Denmark. Classes are based on dialogue and mutual learning between teachers and students. The students stay at the college during the course. Living at a folk college is very much about intercultural awareness and personal growth. Students are young young people between 18 and 30 years. The colleges aim to attract students who wish to develop their skill and understanding in their particular field of interest and who also wish to develop personally and become more clear about their future direction.

The Vestjylland Folk College is a cultural power plant, placed in the beautiful nature by the Fjord of Ringkøbing (a town with about 60.000 inhabitants) and nearby the North Sea.
It considers itself the green folk college of Denmark. Meals are 60-90% organics, the folk college has its own wind turbine which supplies the school with C02 neutral energy together with its solar- and geothermal system. Their ecological garden “Garden of Wonder” gives inspiration to new ways of sustainability.
The primary subjects are sustainable lifestyle, ecological entrepreneurship, dancing, music, singing, creative arts (such as ceramics and painting) as well as theatre, cooking and writing. You can dig into one or two main subjects or create a schedule with a broad cultural content.
Other subjects include areas such as politics and philosophy, sport and outdoor life as well as Danish for foreigners.

Practicalities
- All costs in connection with your participation in this program are included: such as food, accommodation and orientations. However, you will need to bring pocket money for your own spending. Denmark is an expensive country so it is recommended having a minimum of USD 170 per month.
- You will be invited to mid-term orientations with AFS in April and November.
- You will be met by AFS on arrival to Copenhagen airport and helped board the train for your folk college.
